Coronavirus: about a hundred cases of Indian variant detected in France

As France keeps on exiting lockdown, the Indian variant has been recently detected in the country and keeps on spreading, although the contamination toll remains weak – according to Santé Publique France’s data. The health authorities confirm 54 episodes involving a total of around a hundred cases of variant have been found through sequencing.

In France, the health crisis situation is improving as the vaccination campaign is going well. Yet, worrying coronavirus variants remain under thorough surveillance. Among the latter, there is the Indian strain that makes the whole world concerned.

According to their latest epidemiologic report, Santé publique France specifies new confirmations. In all, over a hundred cases of Indian variant have been confirmed through sequencing over the past 7 days. Moreover, "54 episodes involving at least one case" of Indian Covid-19 variant have been found in France as of June 3 in the evening.

Regions were these cases of Indian variant have been mainly found are Île-de-France, with 21 episodes, Auvergne-Rhônes-Alpes (10 episodes), and Nouvelle-Aquitaine, with 6 episodes. In Île-de-France, Santé Publique France alerts on "one isolated case in Oise with possible contamination in business environment in Île-de-France in a place of internation exchanges has been reported", the body confirms.

In mainland France, the Indian variant has been officially detected for the first time on May 11, 2021 in Hauts-de-France in a patient tested positive on May 2, who stayed in India. According to Santé Publique France’s May 13, 2021’s epidemiologic report, the presence of the Indian variant in France has increased over the past two weeks. These data have been delivered by additional analyses on samples collected from people who tested positive.

Santé Publique France reports “24 episodes involving at least one case” detected in seven mainland regions, as well as in Guadeloupe. It mostly involves people who have stayed in India. Yet, the organization also reports 2 family clusters in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and in Île-de-France but not direct relationship with India has been established yet suggesting other non-detected transmission chains. “As of today, no element ruling for a significant community spread has been detected in France. The situation remains thoroughly monitored”, Santé Publique France yet concludes.
