As the Delta variant causes a new surge in the coronavirus epidemic in France, the government has decided to extend the health pass starting from Monday August 9 to more daily life places. A measure instated progressively. Here is what changes in France starting from today.

In France, the coronavirus epidemic situation is escalating. Now, because of the spread of the Delta variant – more contagious than the previous strains reported in France – a rise in cases suggests the pending arrival of a fourth wave. To respond to the increase in contaminations, despite the ongoing vaccination campaign, the government has decided to instate thorough measures.

Therefore, on Monday July 12, 2021, Emmanuel Macron addressed the country to announce new restrictions. To encourage the French to get vaccinated as soon as possible, he announces the health pass is extended to more public places. A measure to be applied progressively since July 21.

The second step started on Monday August 9, 2021. The health pass has been then extended to bars, cafés, restaurants (excluding terraces), gyms, as well as shopping malls. It also applies to hospitals, retirement homes, medico-welfare establishments, as well as planes, trains, and coaches for long-haul journeys. It does not apply to public transit such as metro, tramways, RER or buses. As for shopping malls it is compulsory in some of them.

As the spread of the Delta variant makes people fear a fourth coronavirus epidemic wave is to hit the country very soon, extra measures have been made on Monday July 12, 2021. Teenager vaccination rules are also to change: 16-17 years old no longer need parental authorization, but for teens aged 12 to 15, the authorization from only one parent is enough. Vaccination is also to be mandatory for some professions.

Last but not least, starting from early August, France reinforces border controls to travels from countries said to be at risk. Those who are not vaccinated yet are to self-isolate (quarantine).

For the record, the health pass is delivered to three conditions: negative PCR or antigenic test passed within the past 48 hours, proof of natural immunity or complete vaccination. Note the health obligation only applies to adults: for teens aged 12 to 17, it will be compulsory from late August.
