According to a new decree issued this August 8, 2021 in Journal Officiel, compulsory facemask-wearing will be lifted in places and establishments subject to the health pass. Yet, the department prefect, the venue operator or the event organizer can decide to instate facemask-wearing if they want to.

Starting from Monday August 9, 2021, rules change in France. From this day forth, in addition to museums, show venues, movie theaters, and fairs, you will need to show a health pass to access long-haul transport, restaurants, and their terraces, and other public places..

Following the Constitutional Council's report issued this past August 5, the law about extending the health pass has been passed, and to be instated from August 9, 2021. A  decree issued in Journal Official this August 8, 2021 specifies compulsory facemask-wearing can be lifted in places subject to the health pass, except if the department prefect, the venue operator or the event organizer decide otherwise.

Obligations of wearing a facemask planned in the herein decree do not apply to people acceding to establishments, places and events in the planned conditions in the herein article. Facemask-wearing can yet be made compulsory by the department prefect when the local circumstances require so, as well as by the operator or organizer”, the decree reads.

The news has been confirmed by Health Minsiter Olivier Véran. “Where there is the health pass, we are sure everyone is fully vaccinated or has a very recent and negative PCR test”, and it will therefore be possible to remove facemasks, he said on RTL. Careful though, this softening only applies to customers and not to employees of places subject to the health pass who will have to continue wearing a facemask. “Facemask-wearing remains the rule in companies. The pass being compulsory from August 30 for employees, it is not considered now employees to stop wearing it”, the Labor Minister told AFP.
