France is facing a fourth wave of coronavirus epidemic because of the Delta variant. While the government wishes the French to get massively vaccinated, what is to be expected? According to La Pitié-Salpêtrière head of nephrology Pr. Gilbert Deray, it is still possible to avoid the worst.

The coronavirus epidemic is resurging in France with the spread of the Delta variant, more contagious than the other mutations. Now the country has entered the fourth epidemic wave, the government has instated measures aiming at encouraging the French to get massively vaccinated. But should the country expect the worst?

Invited on BFMTV, La Pitié-Salpêtrière head of nephrology Pr. Gilbert Deray claims the health pass and vaccine are the promise of a better future, although he thinks vaccinal obligation could have been a better option. Nonetheless, if according to his previsions France could soon reach 50,000 cases per day, the professor thinks it can still escape from the worst-case scenario.

If the health pass is applied properly, if everyone – because it depends on everyone – if everyone makes a big effort on complying with health guidelines, and vaccination goes on at high speed (700,000/800,000 injections per day), then I hope we will escape from the worst-case scenario”.

Therefore, the professor recommends avoiding night clubs and wearing facemasks when one is outside and surrounded by crowds. Deray also says the impact of the fourth wave are “very clearly” felt at the AP-HP as younger, without comorbidities and non-vaccinated Covid patients are hospitalized.

Speaking of a heart-breaking situation, Deray tells non-vaccinated patients are full of regrets. “It is always the same conversation: whether the patient can no longer talk (because they passed away), the family tells if ‘If we only knew’, including people saying ‘I was not against the vaccine, but I was in a rush because I’m forty, I was safe’; please do not wait and get vaccinated”.
