According to a preliminary US study, the Moderna vaccine is far more effective against the Delta variant of Covid-19 than the Pfizer vaccine.

A study carried out by the Mayo Clinic, a renowned American university hospital and research federation, indicates that the Moderna vaccine is more effective than the Pfizer vaccine against the Delta variant of Covid-19. This preliminary study, reported by Le Monde, was carried out using data from 50,000 vaccinated and non-vaccinated patients, between January and July 2021. This corresponds to the period when the Delta variant gradually took the place of previous variants.

According to the authors, this work, which requires further investigation and confirmation, has established that Moderna and Pfizer, the two messenger RNA vaccines, are highly effective against the two main strains of Covid-19, but in different ways in different situations. Against the Alpha variant, Pfizer reduced the risk ofhospitalization by 85%, and Moderna by 91.6%. Efficacy againstinfection and transmission is 76% for Pfizer and 86% for Moderna.

Pfizer's efficacy is already declining against the Alpha variant, and has fallen even further against the Delta variant, which is actively circulating. The Moderna vaccine is 76% effective against infection, while the Pfizer vaccine is "only" 42% effective.

Yet Pfizer is the most widely injected vaccine, notably in France , with over 63 million doses injected out of 80 million .
