Calling all Parisian baguette fans, you now have to go to the 12th arrondissement to enjoy Paris best baguette 2021. Makram Akrout defeats Taeib Shal from Les Saveurs de Pierre Demours bakery in the 17th – last year’s winner – and wins the contest.
To discover and enjoy Paris 2021’s best tradition baguette, you have to go to 54 boulevard de Reuilly and visit Les Boulangers de Reuilly bakery. The 42-year-old baker told the AFP he was “very proud”, this award being “the collection of years of experience”, namely 19 years of career in France after he moved from Tunisia.
For the record, the championship for the best French tradition baguette is held every year by the City of Paris. It challenges bakers’ baguettes in the French capital city.
This year, about 173 baguettes have been selected, tested and tasted. To win the award for Paris best baguette, products were to measure between 55 and 70cm (21.65 and 27.55in), weigh between 250 and 300 grams (8.81 and 10.58oz), and have a salt content of 18 grams (0.63oz) per kilogram of flour. Baguettes have been then judged according to criteria such as baking, taste, crumb, smell and look. All bakers in town have been encouraged to compete for the best baguette in Paris 2021, held in partnership with the Professional Chamber of Craft Bakers in Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne.
Including 15 members, this year’s jury panel included professionals, Internet users selected randomly alongside Olivia Polski – Paris deputy mayor for trade, craftsmanship, craft workers and liberal professions, as well as representatives of professional federations including the president of the Union Trade for Bakers in the Greater Paris (Syndicat des Boulangers du Grand Paris), journalists, qualified celebrities such as Taied Sahal – 2020 winner of the Grand Prix de la Baguette.
In addition to the €4000 win, the award for Paris best Baguette gives the brand a great fame and the honor of supplying the Elysée Palace for a whole year.
