Paris without car is happening on Sunday October 1, 2017! For Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, “The first “Journée sans voiture” (day without car) has been an uncontested and indisputable success and has managed to include citizens, to reduce polluting emissions and noise pollution and to arouse Parisians’ and tourists’ enthusiasm”. This explains why Paris Mayor “invites everyone to make the best of this car-free day, contributing to create the healthy, sustainable and calm city Parisians wish for.”
According to Airparif aka the association controlling Paris air quality, the city’s nitrogen dioxide rates have dropped by 40 percent in the areas involved in the first car-free Paris operation in 2015.
For this 3rd edition, Anne Hidalgo makes a splash and forbids cars in all Paris (excluding the belt highway and the woods) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday October 1, 2017.
As recalled by Paris police commissioner Michel Cadot, [there will be dispensations] “of course, but it will be very exceptional. It is all about taking into account special cases allowed to drive prudently: emergency vehicles will be able to reach freely the areas in the same way as delivery cars, taxis and buses.” He also confirms that emergency vehicles will be able to reach hospitals and every Parisian railway station.
Discovering a car-free Paris, seeing bike riders going up Rue de Rivoli in the other way, enjoying calm streets, strolling around on the asphalt usually taken over by cars and seeing Parisians settling down on avenues to enjoy free animations… So many pictures are to be taken!
What about a quiet walk?
