It's one of the jewels in the crown of the town of Nemours: this Saturday, May 18, 2024, on the occasion of Nuit des Musées, come and visit the château-musée de Nemours, and its collections of priceless works.

The town of Nemours is full of surprises, not least its Musée de la Préhistoire d'Île-de-France (Museum of Prehistory in the Île-de-France region ), set in sandstone fields used by man in prehistoric times, and its 12th-century château, considered to be the oldest town château in the Île-de-France region still in existence!

According to written records, the château was founded in the mid-12th century by Gauthier I de Villebéon, grand chamberlain to kings Louis VII and Philippe Auguste. During the French Revolution, the château became the property of the City of Nemours, and was used as a theater, school, warehouse and meeting room, before the Nemours sculptor Justin-Chrysostome Sanson (1833-1910) proposed founding a museum there in 1901.

Since 1903, the Château de Nemours has been home to the Musée des Beaux-Arts, currently boasting some 20,000 works: sculptures, paintings, graphic arts (drawings, prints) and photographs emblematic of the art of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. With this in mind, the museum has decided to accelerate the inventory of the Château-Musée's holdings, and to clarify the condition of the objects listed.

Would you like to discover this fascinating place steeped in history? Good news: Museum Night is on its way! On Saturday, May 18, 2024, the Château-Musée de Nemours will be unveiling its program to the delight of the curious and the passionate!

The Nuit des Musées 2024 program at the Château-Musée de Nemours

  • Self-guided tour of the 17th-century dungeons
    Saturday, May 18, 8:00 pm

In the 17th century, Château de Nemours belonged to Monsieur, brother of Louis XIV. He decided to transform the building into a courthouse and dungeons. During European Museum Night, visitors can go inside and discover the château's 17th-century prisons.

  • Musical performances by Ensemble Dodéka
    Saturday, May 18, 10:30 pm

Ensemble Dodéka was founded in 2018. It brings together 12 string players, all recognized professionals who play without a score and without a conductor. On the occasion of the Nuit des Musées, they will be strolling through the grounds and the château itself. They will perform a quartet based on 19th-century animal art.

A magnificent collection of graphic arts, paintings and sculptures emblematic of the art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries awaits us in this listed building. Shall we go, friends?
