Museums Night 2019 at the Arts et Métiers

On Museums Night 2019, the Musée des Arts et Métiers invites you on Saturday May 18, 2019. On the menu: free visit of the museum throughout the night and many demonstrations of incredible inventions and other events. Families and curious people will be absolutely delighted!

On Museums Night 2019 the Musée des Arts et Métiers welcomes curious children and adults within the museum’s rooms dedicated to inventions of all times.

Along the collections, let yourself be "hypnotized" by Foucault pendulum swings making you see the Earth turning. You will fly away aboard flying machines chasing Icarus’ dream, electrified by human ingenuity’s sparkles and blown away by demonstrations escaped from the past. Set in seven themed sections, the tour allow us to discover the museum's most beautiful pieces.

On the menu of the Museum Nights 2019 at the Musée des Arts et Métiers:

Manufacturers: working as an upholsterer - several sessions from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., without booking
Tack hammer, jaconas, tacks, weaves, come and learn more about upholstery and take part in a collaborative work! Participative workshop provided by the La Source vocational school

Exhibition of a monumental work by Djamal Tatah - from 6 p.m. to midnight, without booking
The Musée des Arts et Métiers presents an original and huge work by artist Djamel Tatah. Exhibited in the museum's church, human figures worked in a sober and clean fashion play with the special light of the place.

Guided tour - Paris flotte-t-il? - at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., by booking (form available soon)
Anthropologist Germain Meulemans and artist Anaïs Tondeur take visitors to a tour inside and outside the museum, showing the places and objects that gave body to their installation called Paris flotte-t-il? Duration: 1 hour.

Foucault Pendulum - at 6:30 p.m., 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.
This night, “you’re invited to see Earth turn”. Through this mythic experience you’re offered to attend a demonstration of the Foucault Pendulum which, designed in 1851 for the first, oscillates between science and amazement. The original experiment took place at the Pantheon: Louis Foucault used a pendulum with a 67m sphere weighing 28kg. This sphere, moved to the Musée des Arts et Métiers fell accidentally in 2010 and dented, it's kept in the museum's storage. Since then, a copy is used for demonstrations. Duration: 30 minutes.

Cugnot’s steam dray (flash tour) 7 p.m., without booking
In 1769, military engineer Nicolas Cugnot builds the first vehicle able to do without animal traction. Come and discover the story of this bold project dropped in 1771, that unleashed passions. Duration: 30 minutes.

Motion picture projector demonstration - at 7:30 p.m., without booking
120 years ago, Louis and Auguste Lumière set up a motion picture projector. The occasion to discover or rediscover this fantastic invention. Duration: 30 minutes.

Phonograph demonstration - at 8 p.m., without booking

The three planes (flash tour) - at 8:30 p.m., without booking
Hanging from the vault of this church, three planes illustrate the debuts of the air adventure whether it's about the technological breakthroughs or sport exploits. Duration: 30 minutes.

Lavoisier’s lab (flash tour) - at 10 p.m., without booking
In front of the original instruments and items, discover the fantastic experiences and the theories developed by Lavoisier. This visit will be the occasion to know more about the uncommon career of the one we considered to be the father of modern chemistry. Duration: 30 minutes

Clément Ader’s plane (flash tour) - at 11:30 p.m., without booking
In the 19th century, with his plane N°3, Clément Ader developed the first “machine heavier than air”, destined to accomplish one of men’s oldest dreams: being able to fly. Duration 30 minutes.
