A day and evening dedicated to science... To mark Nuit des Musées (Museum Night), the Musée Curie invites curious visitors to enjoy a variety of free events on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Located in Marie Curie's former living quarters, on the very spot where she studied and taught radioactivity over a century ago, the museum is offering a number of educational tours and family-friendly activities.
A leading figure in French and international science, Marie Curie and her husband Pierre are famous for their research into radiation. Marie Curie was awarded two Nobel Prizes: one in physics (1903), which she received with her husband, and the other in chemistry (1911). As a tribute to her achievements and exceptional work, Marie Curie (and her husband Pierre) is now buried in the Panthéon.
The Curie Museum: In the footsteps of Marie Curie and her family
At the heart of the Curie campus, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris near the Panthéon, lies the Musée Curie. Open from Wednesday to Saturday, this free place of memory and knowledge offers an insight into the history of radioactivity and its medical applications. [Read more]
The Musée Curie invites science enthusiasts and the curious of all kinds to discover the life and work of this extraordinary woman, particularly during this year's Nuit des Musées. We reveal the program below!
Echoing the upcoming sports festivities of the Paris Olympics, the free bilingual (French/English) exhibition "Avec les Joliot-Curie, c'était physique!" labeled a Cultural Olympiad by Paris 2024 retraces the sporting impulses of a scientific community. These were the Curies, the Joliot-Curies, their collaborators and their circle of friends. Illustrated with archival photographs, including many never-before-seen shots from family albums, the exhibition highlights the other, unexpected passion of these researchers: outdoor sports.
The Musée Curie is located on the first floor of the historic premises of the former Curie laboratory of the Institut du Radium - the radiation physics and chemistry laboratory headed by Marie Curie and Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie.
In the museum, a giant screen will show continuous excerpts from family films of Marie Curie with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, in the mountains, in the countryside, in their garden and by the sea. In the amphitheatre, an exclusive interview with the children and daughter-in-law of Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie will be shown continuously. They talk about their family heritage: the intergenerational transmission of the passion for amateur physical activities of all kinds.
A Musée Curie mediator will take you on a sunset stroll in the footsteps of photographs from the "Avec les Joliot-Curie, c'était physique! The sporting impulses of a scientific community". Discover Marie and Pierre Curie, Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie, their children, collaborators and friends from an intimate angle. It's a way of rediscovering those years of institutionalization of social hygiene and the prophylactic virtues of sport.
Activities start early at the Musée Curie: this means we can get the party underway in the early afternoon, and keep the museums going all evening long! Don't forget to book your free tickets on the Musée Curie calendar.
