Museums Night 2018 at Paris Musée Guimet

The Musée National des Arts Asiatiques – Guimet in Paris takes part in Museums Night on Saturday May 19, 2018 from 7 p.m. to midnight and offers an exhibition about the world as seen from Asia.

Museums Night offers the occasion to participating institutions to provide the public with a new look on their collections. Some propose music guided tours, others, dances, kids animations…

The Musée Guimet offers for the first time a cartographic exhibition telling another story of the world, fully embracing the Asian point of view. Masterpieces, famous or never-seen-before, are evidence of richness of the varied traditions (China, Japan, Korea, India, Vietnam, etc.) and the fruitful exchanges between the different Asian regions, as well between Asia and the rest of the world.

These maps and iconographic representations (paintings, engravings, manuscripts or items), often relegated to the status of exotic documents, appearing here as true works of art and precious historical sources, promoting the decisive role of Asia in the globalization process from the 15th century to the 20th century. They who the cosmographical constructions, pilgrimage routes, discovery routes, imperial gestures, street projects, and the colonial expansions, as many cultural phenomenon as social praxis participating to the invention of Asia which, yesterday as much as today, is set at the center of the world.
