Wednesday, June 21, 2023 is the traditional Fête de la Musique! It's time to sing along, dance and celebrate with your family! Whether you choose a classical music concert or a brass band, this year again, June 21 is celebrated with music!
But what is the Fête de la Musique? A popular and free musical event, the Fête de la Musique was created in 1982 on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture. That year, the studies and research department of the Ministry of Culture conducted a major survey on the cultural practices of the French. It was discovered that five million people, including one young person out of two, play a musical instrument. From then on, Jack Lang, Christian Dupavillon, architect-scenographer, member of his Cabinet and Maurice Fleuret imagined a great popular event with the objective of allowing all musicians to express themselves and to be known. The very first Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21, 1982, the symbolic day of the summer solstice.
And it was a great success, since that year, many musicians set up everywhere in the streets, squares, kiosks, courtyards, gardens, train stations, and squares to play their music.
In 1985, the Fête de la Musique began to be exported, on the occasion of the European Year of Music. In 2017, more than 120 countries in the world participated in the Fête de la Musique!
