From September 14 to November 13, 2019 Paris Opéra Bastille provides several performances of Giacomo Puccini’s famous opera, Madama Butterfly. A dive into Japan in the early 20th century.

Japan as seen through the prism of opera… Paris Opéra Bastille provides several performances of Madama ButterflyGiacomo Puccini’s major work – from September 14 to November 13, 2019. A tragedy in two acts sometimes divided into three, taking place in the early 20th century in the Country of the Rising Sun, two opposite worlds colliding.

First of all, we have the world of Cio-Cio san (Madama Butterfly), a young 15-year-old geisha who takes marriage very seriously and remains loyal to its traditions, but also the world of Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, an American soldier who falls in love with the young woman, rents a traditional house and marries her to get entertained. Two worlds that – just like for Romeo and Juliette – ends with the death of one of them, naming Madama Butterfly who when learning that Pinkerton got married to another woman while being away, ends up killing herself using Jigai, a ritual suicide mostly reserved for women (which is the equivalent of seppuku).

An opera mainly inspired by Pierre Loti’s work, Madame Chrysanthème, that tells more or less the same story naming a young officer of the French navy leaves to Japan and marries a Japanese woman Kiku-san (Madame Chrysanthème) in Nagasaki. Unlike Pierre Loti’s work that tells about his life, Giacomo Puccini is inspired here by “the popular melodies and sonorities of Japanese voices”. Note that the production – quite clean – is by Robert Wilson and “espouses to perfection the dramatic intensity and underlying violence of this thoroughly Japanese tragedy”. Let’s get away for a night, shall we?
