A true ufo… this is what offers the Opéra Garnier by proposing several performances of Yvonne, Princesse de Bourgogne, a work written by Philippe Boesmans and running from February 26 to March 8, 2020. A very original opera “both sordid and droll, of unexpected cruelty but also irresistibly seductive” based on the eponymous play by Witold Gombrowicz.
A princess who has nothing of a princess about her… And for good reason: “She is ugly, apathetic and taciturn” as the Opéra Garnier explains. A disturbing princess who “irritates to excess” and who ends up by becoming “the constant butt of taunts”. At the beginning, this opera has been commissioned to the Belgian composer by the Opéra National de Paris in 2008 and reveals “all the darkness of the human soul”.
A Luc Bondy production created in 2008 that remains as disturbing even after the librettist died in 2015. And a libretto that – like the score – keeps this black humor and this cynicism oh-so typical of the writer and the play on which this opera is based. A very strange and intriguing opera to discover urgently! Let’s book, friends, shall we?
