Balanchine’s Joyaux at Paris Opera

Choreographer George Balanchine pays tribute to the female sex in Joyaux, a three-part ballet from 1967 and performed at the Palais Garnier from September 22 to October 12, 2017.

Emeraudes, Rubis and Diamants then Paris, New York and Saint-Petersburg. Three sets, three atmospheres, three inspirations for George Balanchine’s ballet inspired by the dazzling windows of New York fifth avenue (rumor has it Balanchine decided to create the choreography of this ballet following a visit to the Van Cleef & Arpels jeweler) and by the greatest ballet schools.

In a décor designed by Christian Lacroix (who obviously created the costumes too), the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris dances on music by Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Piotr Ilytch Tchaikovsky this peculiar piece doesn’t have any thread other than celebrating women through jewels and the sparkle they provide. An enchanting ballet.
