This June 1, the Nuit Blanche will be taking place in the center of Paris. A host of events are planned in every corner of the capital, but a bigger surprise awaits you in the heart of the city. On the square in front of the Hôtel de Ville, and on the banks of the Seine, voie Georges Pompidou, a variety of performances are on offer until 2am.
For this 22nd edition, artistic director Claire Tancons has set her sights on the heart of the town, with a program of unusual and fascinating events that change throughout the night. Expect the unexpected... And especially the unexpected! Here are the details of this original program, to be discovered on the forecourt of Paris City Hall.
Anarchic ride? A protest demonstration? WÉLÉLÉ !!!, Kenny Dunkan's mass performance, whose title borrows from a Creole expression evoking festive, collective joy, is part of both the emancipatory spirit of mas and the libertarian dynamic of sliding. Carnival and skateboarding, whose fundamentally political dimension of spatial occupation is often obscured, or recuperated, is recovered to make visible the now openly multicultural dimension of an urban sport and its Parisian protagonists. From the Parvis de l'Hôtel de Ville, decked out in the colors of the 2024 Olympics, to the Place de la République, the capital's legendary spotlight, dozens of skateboarders will be transformed into human beatboxes, each emitting the nocturnal song of a different creature, from the twilight serenade of birds to the haunting stridency of frogs, to form a vast mobile soundsystem. Together, they will in turn transform the nocturnal experience through the resulting ambulatory symphony, whose contours are as porous as the night itself.
Kenny Dunkan was born in 1988 in Guadeloupe. He regularly draws on the visual culture of the Caribbean, and in particular that of carnivals, periods of social, cultural and political role reversal, to develop a body of work that addresses the French colonial heritage and the persistence of its modes of representation.
