The Bobino theater, also known as Bobino, is located at 20 rue de la Gaîté in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. Under the direction of Jean-Marc Dumontet since 2010, the theater has returned to its roots, presenting a wide range of shows.
The Bobino theater was originally the Théâtre du Luxembourg, or Bobino, named after a clown who entertained in the Luxembourg Gardens in the 1870s. The Bobino quickly made a name for itself with acrobatics and juggling shows. In 1873, the theater's name was taken over by Fernand Strauss, who set up a café-concert at 20 rue de la Gaîté. In 1887, however, the police called for the café-concert to be closed, as it was illegally offering mini-plays.
In the 1930s, after Pathé bought the venue, Bobino became a major venue for chanson. Great names such asEdith Piaf, Georges Brassens, Léo Ferre and Joséphine Baker performed there. In 1985, however, the building was bought and demolished . In 1991, the Studio Bobino was created, but did not revive its musical tradition.
It's only since 2010, after major renovations undertaken by new director Jean-Marc Dumontet, that Bobino has been restored to its former glory. In a large 900-seat hall, you can enjoy a wide range of musical performances, but not only.
