Visiting a high school over the weekend? Your children may well drag their feet... Before they let themselves be seduced by this place with its rich and fascinating history! For the 40th edition of the Journées du Patrimoine, the Lycée Voltaire invites you to discover its history through guided tours on Saturday, September 16, 2023.
Designed by architect Eugène Train, the school was inaugurated in 1890 by President Sadi Carnot during the Third Republic, and was for many years the only lycée in north-eastern Paris. When it first opened, it was an all-boys school, before gradually becoming co-ed from 1973 onwards.
On one side of the main courtyard, you'll see a marble sculpture created in 1907 by Victor Segoffin. This monument was originally intended for the Pantheon, but was eventually stored for six years in a shed before being moved to the Lycée Voltaire. Today, the school is home to over 900 high school students, 440 middle school students and 80 students in preparatory classes.
