James Cameron has done it again! Avatar: The Water Way is the masterpiece we've been waiting 13 years for. And the wait was worth it! After breaking numerous records, the long-awaited sequel toAvatar, winner of theOscar for Best Special Effects, lands on the Disney+ streaming platform on May 17, 2024.
We won't tell you anything about the scenario, but one thing's for sure: this sequel surpasses the first installment in every way: longer, more impressive, more moving, more mysterious too, it raises a lot of questions and augurs well for the rest of the saga. And what a feast for the eyes! James Cameron is accustomed to pushing the limits of what cinema technology allows, which means that his films are always a joy to watch(Terminator 2 and Abyss have not aged a bit, despite thirty-year-old special effects!) Here again, he pushes 3D and HFR(High Frame Rate) technology to unprecedented levels, for an absolutely splendid rendering from start to finish.
This technology allows the filmmaker to explore a previously unseen part of Pandora: the sea, and the tribes who live there. It's an opportunity to discover a whole gallery of new characters, including a tribal leader played by Kate Winslet. And above all, a whole new underwater fauna. Once again, a feast for the eyes.
Scenistically, this opus is also very interesting. As the screenwriter of every film he has ever directed, James Cameron is the kind of filmmaker with a number of favorite themes, and all those he has tackled throughout his filmography can be found in Avatar: The Water Way. We see, of course, Cameron's obsession with the ocean floor, as much for the wonders it holds(Abyss) as for the dangers it poses(Titanic). His attraction to mecha soldiers(Aliens). His fascination with hyper-charismatic bad guys(Terminator and Terminator 2). And all this while pursuing his life's work, the one he's been thinking about for over thirty years, and which he could complete by the end of the decade.
James Cameron has often said that the 13 years separating the release of the first twoAvatar opuses were necessary, as he spent years refining his universe and constantly rewriting new versions of the script. All this work was not in vain, and today we can witness one of the most formidable spectacles in the history of cinema.
