Quentin Dupieux is unstoppable. Releasing one or two films a year, the filmmaker and musician is one of the most prolific in French cinema, and his latest absurdities(Incroyable mais vrai, Fumer fait couser) have proved that Dupieux tends to age well. While Daaaaaalí! hit cinemas on February 7, Yannick, released on August 2, is broadcast on Canal+ this Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
Yannick: in which famous Parisian theater was Quentin Dupieux's film shot?
"Yannick", the new film by Quentin Dupieux due in cinemas on August 2, is a huis-clos set within the walls of a real Parisian theater. The theater in question is the Théâtre Déjazet, in the 10th arrondissement. [Read more]
Quentin Dupieux is used to large castings, and this time he called on Pio Marmaï(Les Trois Mousquetaires, En Corps), Blanche Gardin (whom the director has already directed in Fumer fait Tousser), and the revelation Raphaël Quenard, discovered this year in Chien de la Casse and Je Verrai toujours vos visages among others.
Our opinion on Yannick (2023):
In the middle of a performance of "Le Cocu", a very bad boulevard play, Yannick gets up and interrupts the show to take control of the evening...
For a film made in secret, on an ultra-limited budget and produced in record time in parallel with the production of"Daaaaaali!","Yannick" is surprisingly good! Quentin Dupieux shows us that he's at ease with any genre with this huis-clos (a single location, a handful of characters and sober direction). With just over an hour on the clock, the film is consistently hilarious, and it owes it all to its incredible performer. Because yes, the film wouldn't have been as good without Raphaël Quenard. The revelation of 2023 carries the film on his shoulders and proves himself a great actor. He's a real UFO in French cinema, and the filmmaker makes the most of his talent.
His phrasing, dialogues and reactions are all brilliant. We inevitably end up getting attached to this not-so-crazy outsider, who just wanted to have a good time. And even if the film consists of a series of deaf dialogues in which Yannick wants to make his opinion heard, and takes the whole room hostage to do so, the film is never repetitive, and always finds a way to reinvent itself. Yannick is the surprise of the summer. Nobody expected it, but you're all going to love it.
