As The Vigil did before it with Jewish folklore, Inside draws on Indian culture to terrify the viewer. Bishal Dutta 's horror film is due in cinemas on September 6.
The film follows the day-to-day life of Sam, a young Indian high-school student, who witnesses a terrifying supernatural phenomenon at her school that robs her of her childhood best friend. From then on, a succession of mysterious events occur around her, but also in her dreams, driving her to anxiety and paranoia when she believes she is being spied on by a strange creature.
Throughout the film's set-up and build-up of tension, Inside follows the classic motifs of the horror genre to the letter, and doesn't necessarily seek to renew them. In fact, the beginning is often clichéd, and not always coherent in terms of the reactions of the protagonist, who would fare better if she spoke to those around her about what she's experiencing. And as the film progresses, you might think it's not very good.
But fortunately, the film pulls itself together in its third act, giving us what we've come to look for in this kind of film: some really good scares. When the monster finally reveals itself, the tension is palpable and keeps us on our toes. It's a pity the creature's design is so cheap, because the rest is mastered.
As well as discovering more about Indian culture, Inside also reveals a not necessarily original, but well-executed story about belonging to an ethnic minority and preferring assimilation.
