Queer art exhibition "Munnezza: iel, queer and Love" returns to Montreuil

The Munnezza exhibition questions human fragility and marginalization by exposing the singular beauty of LGBTQIA+ people. Following on from the Paris edition, this new installation will showcase the work of six artists, including two Montreuillois, all committed to the queer art awareness movement. On view from March 9 to 30, 2024.

Munnezza - iel, queer and Love, montreuilloise season!

"Munnezza" is the Neapolitan term for garbage, but also for people scorned by prejudice. This contempt finds its way into art, where artists and works of art are censored.

Following the success of the June 2023 exhibition in Paris, supported by the cities of Paris and Naples, this edition at the Galerie Ephémère in Montreuil (Croix de Chavaux metro station) promises to be a new artistic exploration. The exhibition will showcase the work of six artists from different backgrounds, including two Montreuillois, all involved in the queer art awareness movement.

You'll have the privilege of discovering never-before-seen photographic diptychs by Neapolitan photographer Fabio Schiattarella, created in dialogue with eco-sculptures by Paolo Valerio, clinical psychologist in the LGBT field and Neapolitan artist. Their collaboration, initiated during the first edition of Munnezza at the Italian Cultural Center, has evolved with the support of the Centre LGBT d'Ile de France, involving members of the center as well as others.

Visual artist Sacha Golemanas blends silk velvet, light and natural dyes, rediscovering the sewing of her childhood, marked by snails and slugs. Her work, inspired by these memories and the complexity of feelings evoked by the snail since the Middle Ages, invites us to explore the non-binary nature of our thoughts and emotions when faced with the outside world.

Vahab Bandari, a photographer from post-revolutionary Iran, presents the story of Alireza, a gay Iranian refugee, whose journey of survival becomes the focus of a poignant body of work illustrating the quest for asylum and identity.

Finally, Russian-born photographer Nikita Erphene explores the fluidity of gender through an intimate photographic series, capturing loved ones in full drag. More intimate than drag exuberance, her work favors close-up shots, offering a vision of metamorphosis.

Mediation will be present throughout the exhibition, accompanied by a booklet written in collaboration with Quentin Petit dit Duhal, PhD in queer art history, offering visitors deep insights into each artist and their works.

With this new exhibition, the artists continue to challenge societal norms by celebrating art that deconstructs gender and sexuality, reconstructing bodies in a new political and psychological context.

The opening will take place on Saturday, March 9 at 5pm at Galerie éphémère, featuring an immersive performance by Montreuil-based performance artistHelio Volana, which will then be extended by his sound video installation: "Voguing is not a crime", a tribute to O'shae Sibley, murdered at 28 because he was gay, black and proud. O'shae Sibley was stabbed to death on July 29, 2023 in a Brooklyn gas station while voguing with a group of friends.

Join us in this celebration of love, diversity and creativity!
