The Panthéon is one of France's most symbolic national monuments. Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, this imposing edifice represents, in its own way, the history of France. Come and discover it for free during the Journées du Patrimoine, on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September 2023.
The monument, dedicated to the great men of the French Republic, is housed in a church designed by the architect Jacques Germain Soufflot, a fervent admirer of Greco-Roman architecture. She chose to build it on a Greek cross plan, and the entire architectural style of the church was imbued with.
In 1791, the idea was mooted of grouping the tombs of France's great men in a place dedicated to them, along the lines ofWestminster Abbey in England, the death of Mirabeau.
Since then, the Panthéon has welcomed the remains of some of the Republic's greatest figures. The crypt contains the tombs of Rousseau, Voltaire,Émile Zola, Jean Moulin, Louis Braille, René Cassin, Victor Schœlcher, Jean Monnet, Marie Curie(the first woman to be admitted) and, more recently, Simone Veil. And a little curiosity: the Pantheon has been home to a copy of Foucault's pendulum since 1851.
The Journées du Patrimoine are an ideal opportunity to visit this monument and meet all these exceptional figures. But for this 40th edition, the Panthéon also has a surprise in store! To find out more, take a look at the program below...
