The museum, founded in 1939 by Dr. Louis Senlecq - then mayor of L'Isle-Adam, surgeon and lover of art and regional history - in the Maison des Joséphites, has been welcoming visitors since 2006, after a series of renovations, to discover local history and the artists and great men who have illustrated the town. For a long time, the museum was even controlled by the Direction des Musées de France and managed by theAssociation des Amis de L'Isle-Adam.

  • Exhibition Cappiello, caricaturist (1898-1905)
    Saturday, May 18, 6:00 p.m.

    Exhibition from April 28 - September 22 2024

Famous for his work as a poster artist during the Belle Époque (Klaus chocolate, Thermogène, Nil cigarette paper...), Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was also a brilliant caricaturist, sowing his drawings in some of the most famous satirical newspapers of his time (Le Rire, Le Sourire, Frou-Frou, Le Cri de Paris...) and sometimes in dailies like Le Gaulois.
Leaving portrait-charge and satire of manners to others, Cappiello concentrated on the personalities and attitudes of the leading actresses, playwrights and music-hall artists of the day. His uncluttered style, instantly recognizable, hit the mark. The artist's work as a caricaturist is put into perspective here, alongside his work as a poster artist and sculptor. Through drawings, preparatory sketches, posters and sculptures - several of which are presented for the first time - a portrait emerges of the artistic, literary and socialites of Paris during the Belle Époque.
This exhibition brings together some one hundred works and documents from the Atelier Cappiello, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris).
