What is trampolining in a nutshell?

Trampolining is first and foremost a hobby known to the general public - everyone has tried it - but it's also an Olympic sport, since Sydney in 2000.

How do the tests work?

It's very simple: there are four scoring criteria: movement, flight time, difficulty and execution. The objective is to stay in the middle of the trampoline while going as high as possible, as measured by a machine under the trampolines. For the difficulty criterion, you have to do as many twists and turns as possible, while keeping your legs straight to meet the execution criterion.

How do you qualify for 2024?

There are several selection methods, the first being the World Championships, where the aim is to reach the final. But that's not where we'll be going, but to the World Cups, where the aim is to finish in the top eight in the overall standings.

How do you feel about this expectation?

I'm feeling good, confident, and I need to take it step by step, training obviously with the Olympics in the back of my mind, but not getting ahead of myself, i.e. the competitions coming up during the year.

Where do the events take place? What do you think of this spot?

It will be at Bercy (Accor Arena), a spot with a special history, since in 1986, Lionel Pioline, a former trampolinist, won the world champion title in this arena. It will be both beautiful and symbolic to follow in his footsteps almost 40 years later!

Which countries represent the toughest competition for you?

It comes mainly from Asia! In particular with the Chinese, who have a very fine school and a very fine way of jumping. They're very inspiring, and we were lucky enough to do a training course with them where we were able to see their training method, and that taught us a lot. We're due to go back this year in May!

What's the difference in terms of preparing for the Olympics at home?

I'm used to saying that the Olympics are the Holy Grail, but at home, it's even better! There's even more involvement, and today, we have a generation that's extremely lucky to be able to experience this. Many former French sports greats haven't had this opportunity, notably David Douillet, to represent his country at home. So we've got all the cards in our hands!

Tell us your trampoline story!

I discovered it by chance when I was a kid, I did a year of swimming when I was 7, I was very hyperactive and acrobatic. I loved walking on my hands and jumping on my parents' bed, so my mother decided to enroll me in a gym. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the Palais des Sports in Saint-Denis, it turned out to be for girls only, with apparatus such as the beam and uneven bars.

It wasn't meant for a boy, but in another room that day there was trampoline training and I said to my mom:"that's what I want to do", without hesitation! It was exactly what I was looking for and I've always been into it!

What has it brought you in life?

My competitive spirit, my desire to give nothing away, to always give 100% in what I do. Learning to cope with stress too, because that's something you encounter a lot in top-level sport.

Which sportsperson has inspired you?

In my sport, there are several, obviously in France, Grégoire Pennes, Sébastien Martiny, David Martin too. Internationally, it would be more Masaki Ito, a Japanese, but in sport in general, I'm a big fan of Rafael Nadal , whom I consider to be the best sportsman on the planet and even of all time!

What sets you apart in your discipline and gives you a better chance?

I have a particularity in that I'm one of the highest, I have the ability to go very, very high, and since height is one of the scoring criteria... On top of that, the higher you go, the more time you have to do the tricks, so that's kind of my advantage!

How do you put aside fear to jump so high?

What you need to know is that fear is completely natural; on the contrary, if you're not afraid, you're not aware of the danger. Fear is there to remind you to concentrate and visualize what you're going to do, to be very vigilant, so you mustn't forget fear, but work with it.

The place/club in the Île-de-France region where you trained that marked your life?

I started out at the Saint-Denis club, and today I'm still a member there, so it's a place that has had a big impact on me, but there was also my time at the Pôle Espoirs in Bois-Colombes, for over 10 years, and now the INSEP. These are really the three places that have enabled me to develop fully in my discipline.

What advice would you give to those who want to take up the sport?

To get started, my advice is obviously to go to a trampoline club, but there are many other ways to try out trampolining, including trampoline parks. There are lots of them in the Paris region these days, you can find them everywhere, and it's a great way to discover the activity! The aim is to have fun first of all, because it's a very playful sport, and then, like me, competition will come naturally!

SAP's special question: do you have a favorite place to go in the region that you'd like us to discover?

As I live not far from the INSEP and therefore the Bois de Vincennes, I like to stroll there and when spring comes, go to the Rosa Bonheur guinguette, which is a really nice spot!
