Montaigne, Les Essais is a one-man show adapted and performed by Hervé Briaux. For 1 hr 10, the actor, playing Montaigne, immerses us in the best extracts from the Essais at the Théâtre de Poche Montparnasse .

A great 16th-century philosopher and humanist, Montaigne began writing Les Essais in 1572. He modified the text continuously until his death, even after the book's publication in 1580. Stricken with gravel, Montaigne died in 1592. Les Essais is the greatest work of his career. The book covers a wide range of subjects: medicine, the arts, books, domestic affairs, ancient histories, horses, illness, accompanied by reflections on Man and his own life. Montaigne's Essays, comprising 3 volumes, has had a significant impact on philosophical and literary thought over the centuries .

Hervé Briaux, who graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur in 1980, has performed in hundreds of shows, in all eras and genres. The actor has also written a dozen theatrical adaptations, including Chateaubriand, Mémoires d'Outre Tombe, which he also plays at the Théâtre de Poche, after having interpreted Montaigne.

Montaigne, Les Essais is on view at the Théâtre de Poche Montparnasse from Tuesday to Saturday at 7pm.
