The Musée du Luxembourg takes us to the art salons from 1780 to 1830 meeting female artists with the “Femmes peintres, des artistes comme les autres” (Female painters, artists like others) exhibition running from May 19 to July 4, 2021. As soon as museums are allowed to reopen, meet the great artists that marked the story of painting.
The museum offers us to get to know more about this unique period of time in France during which female painters made it to the art scene. We discover how the French Revolution changed the world of the artistic creation through 80 works painted by Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, Marguerite Gérard, Constance Mayer and many others. The exhibition also highlights rather unknown artists as well as big names of the painting.
It is not only about presenting a few women who has been famous because of their paintings. With the exhibition of the Musée du Luxembourg, we learn more about the art training conditions, the status of female artists from 1780 to 1830, the fights they had to lead to produce and exhibit their own works. The tour gives us an overview of the daily life of these painters, behind the light of the art salons.
Walking around paintings, we feel observed by hundreds of eyes painted with such realism by these artists they are disturbing. Their talent is to be seen: the play on colors, shadow and lights, techniques used, textures... Some works fo art are hypnotizing so much they look alive.
Even though the Musée du Luxembourg gives pride of place to portraits in this exhibition, you will also be able to enjoy magnificent landscapes and war scenes inspired by stories from the painters' era.
Do not miss this beautiful exhibition showing masterpieces and artists unfairly little-known. Let yourselves be enchanted by these paintings and enjoy a sweet moment untouched by time, in an one-on-one meeting with these female painters.
