A rewriting of his own work... This is what Giuseppe Verdi proposed with Don Carlo, an Italian opera composed in 1884 and intended as a reworked version of Don Carlos, the great French opera by the same composer staged a few years earlier in 1867. Krzysztof Warlikowski directs the work atOpéra Bastille from October 25 to November 23, 2019.
The work was originally adapted from the tragedy of the same name by the German poet and writer Friedrich von Schiller. Set in 1559, this five-act opera features the love affair between the Spanish Infante Carlos, the daughter of the King of France (Henry II) Elisabeth de Valois and the Spanish King Philippe II. A love triangle set against the backdrop of the Inquisition and the war between Spain and the Netherlands.
A work in Italian, for this second version, more "passionate" by its language than was the previous version in French. But whether it's the Italian version or the original,"the finesse of the score and the dramatic framework" persist, interweaving"political, family and love conflicts". A veritable historical fresco to which director Krzysztof Warlikowski lends"the depth of an in camera setting where the human psyche is laid bare, revealing the paralysis of men faced with the legacy of power". From October 25 to November 11, Roberto Alagna plays Don Carlo... Shall we go?
