King Lear in a new light... This is what theOpéra Garnier is offering with several performances of Lear, an opera by Aribert Reimann, from November 21 to December 7, 2019. The work is inspired by William Shakespeare's play of the same name.
It all began with a baritone, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who wanted to play the title role in King Lear, and first approached Aribert Reimann without success. But it was in 1975, when Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper commissioned him, that he finally accepted the challenge of this unstageable opera, as other composers had already tried and failed.
The story of this opera is as well known as Shakespeare's work: it takes place in Scotland at the court of King Lear, who, tired of reigning, ends up dividing his kingdom between his three daughters, Goneril, Codélia and Regan. An opera that brings to the surface"the tortuous dissimulations and violence of human relationships" through"darkly timbred orchestration" and "nuanced vocal treatment". Calixto Beito 's"carthartic" staging"strips down each of the characters". Intriguing enough to take its place, folks?
