The perfect time to discover Vincenzo Bellini's very first masterpiece...Opéra Garnier offers two unique performances of the Norma composer's first triumph, Le Pirate, on December 16 and 19, 2019. The title role was created from scratch by French soprano Henriette Méric-Lalande in 1826.
The opera is set in 13th-century Sicily. It follows Gualtiero, leader of a band of pirates, who is in love with Imogene, a young woman forced to marry Ernesto, Duke of Caldora, to save her father's life. Ernesto, for his part, is the man who drove Gualtiero from his lands. A most complicated love triangle and a rare work offered here in concert version.
A work written by librettist Felice Romani, itself inspired by Charles Robert Maturin's play Bertram, or The Castle of St. Aldobrand. And an opera that has brought renowned sopranos to the role of Imogene, such as Maria Callas and Monteserrat Caballé, to make way for one of the most Verdian sopranos of her generation, Sondra Radvanovsky. Shall we reserve a seat, folks?
