"Opera must make the audience weep, tremble and die"... A phrase from Vincenzo Bellini to his librettist Carlo Pepoli that has never been truer concerning Les Puritains (I Puritani in Italian), whichOpéra Bastille programs from September 7 to October 5, 2019. A major work for Bellini, the composer's latest opera is based on the historical drama Têtes Rondes et Cavaliers by Jacques-François Ancelot and Joseph Xavier Boniface, known as Saintine.
The work recounts"the story of a thwarted love affair between a royalist and the daughter of a republican" who falls into madness. And a staging by Laurent Pelly, offering"a Piranesian dramaturgy, both precise and sharp". And a three-act opera presented here in its original text, far from the alternative Neapolitan version and leaving out the duo Giorgio and Riccardo.
An opportunity to discover or rediscover one of the most influential operas of its time, but also one of the most performed to this day, and above all four of the most difficult leading roles in the Belcan repertoire. In short, great opera (despite some known inconsistencies in the libretto) for all music lovers... Shall we go, friends?
