Originally, every morning in December, parents handed out pictures, usually religious ones, to their children to tide them over until Christmas. This tradition was soon revived. In the 20th century, a publisher came up with the very first version of an Advent calendar, consisting of drawings to be colored on a cardboard base, followed a few years later by a calendar with little doors or windows to be opened.
