Following in the footsteps of legends like Agnès Varda, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jodie Foster, Michael Douglas, George Lucas, and Robert De Niro, the Cannes Film Festival 2026 will honor a new cinema icon with a Lifetime Achievement Palme d'Or.
For this 79th edition of the festival, President Iris Knobloch and General Delegate Thierry Frémaux have selected director, producer, and screenwriter Peter Jackson to honor his career and his enduring dedication to cinema.
“Receiving the Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes will be one of the highlights of my career. Cannes has played a crucial role in my journey as a filmmaker. Back in 1988, I attended the Film Market with my first feature, Bad Taste, and in 2001, we screened a scene in an early preview of The Lord of the Rings.” said the New Zealand director upon hearing about his nomination.
He added: "I am deeply grateful to the Cannes Film Festival, which has always celebrated daring and visionary cinema, for recognizing me among the artists whose work continues to inspire me."
Peter Jackson will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Palme d'Or during the opening ceremony of the 79th Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, May 12.
