Faced with the spread of the Delta variant in the country, more and more people fear a new epidemic surge in the coming weeks. This July 4, 2021, French Health Minister Olivier Véran even warned and said a “wave is likely from late July”.

Will the Delta variant ruin the summer holidays? Over the past days, scientists and government do not hide their concern when it comes to the spread of the Indian variant and the decreasing vaccination campaign. This Sunday July 4, 2021, Olivier Véran warned on Twitter: “The virus has not decreased in five days, it is even increasing again. Because of the Delta variant which is very contagious. The UK example shows a wave is likely from late July. We can limit it and limit the health impact: health guidelines, vaccine, testing/alerting/protecting”, the Minister tweeted this Sunday.

This Monday July 5, Professor Alain Fischer also shared his concerns on France Info. “We need to get organized and vaccinated against the Delta variant, it’s a race against time”. Yesterday already, the President of the Vaccinal Strategy Orientation Board explained “everything plays out in the two weeks to come” to avoid “a fourth wave caused both by the Delta variant, the surge in contacts, when school resumes, and a more virus-likely climate”.

As for Jean-François Delfraissy, he fears a fourth wave in Fall.

Covid: Pr. Delfraissy thinks the "4th wave will be much more moderate than the first three"
As France starts the last step of the lockdown exit process on June 30, Pr. Jean-François Delfraissy thinks "there will be a 4th wave" this fall "but more more moderate than the first 3". "Vaccines are working against the delta variant, if two injections have been given. Hence the message: you need to get vaccinated, and get both injections by Fall", the Head of the Scientific Committee insisted on this Wednesday morning on France Inter. [Read more]

The very spread of the Delta variant has authorities and specialists worried, making them fear a new epidemic surge in the coming weeks. In France, the Delta variant is currently reported in about a third of new cases.

And the situation is specifically preoccupying in Landes where the incidence rate crossed the alert threshold because of this Delta variant. “What happens in Landes will happen in the entire country”, the head of Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency stated this past July 3rd.

Many specialists also look at what happens abroad, and especially in Great Britain where the Delta variant is now dominating, causing a rise in new Covid-19 case numbers. It also happens in Russia and Portugal where authorities decided to implement another nighttime curfew in several cities including Lisbon and Porto.

Faced with the situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) also warned against a new wave caused by the Delta variant.

As the epidemic situation is improving in France, the spread of the variant Delta (ex-Indian) might cause a fourth wave. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, it might be dominant in the European Union by the end of August. [Read more]
