Since the beginning of the epidemic, wastewater has been a Covid-19 epidemic indicator. The Obépine network has found traces of the virus over the past weeks, as the data are slightly increasing again.

As winter is coming, Covid-19 epidemic data seme to be slightly increasing again, including an 11% increase in positive cases. An evolution confirmed in wastewater – like it has at the beginning of the epidemic. The Obépine network states they have been finding for several weeks some “significanttraces of the virus in some areas. This network is an epidemiologic observatory created to prevent the spread of coronavirus thanks to wastewater.

Virology professor Vincent Maréchal told France Info this was an “early sign” to take into account. A resurgence of the epidemic seems very likely according to this indicator, but yet, it does not announce a new wave. The Obépine network is a good way to monitor the increase in contaminations in water treatment plants, sometimes even earlier.

The professor insists on the importance of sending public health messages to the French after a significant decrease in health guidelines and a general slackening while the “Fall-Winter period is very likely for the spread of respiratory viruses”.
