Over 150 years after representative of the time’s art industries created it, the musée des Arts Décoratifs dares and unveils its definition of luxury, or rather luxuries, in an exhibition awaited by all, and running from October 14, 2020 to May 2, 2021. In a release, the museum says that in 2020 an exhibition focusing on luxury cannot be limited to the mere ostentatious presentation of dozens of items by major brands without taking it a step further.
“Without being limited to the idea of French luxury” the Luxes exhibition focuses on an anthropologic and cultural point of view and even presents a set of cards of an extreme elegance, the Pearl of Abu Dhabi, the oldest in the world, “fragile testimony of the first settlements”, an Egyptian powder spoon, as well as scientific tools and rare manuscripts from the Antiquity, alongside dresses designed by Dior or Chanel. Over 100 pieces are highlighted to show what was considered as luxurious over different time periods.
In addition to this history lesson, the Arts Déco also tends to highlight the reinvention of luxury in our contemporary societies: after a long period of consumerism and ostentation with standard items across the world, the environmental awareness and feelings are back in the race, making of simple items passed on between generations precious luxury objects competing with the most beautiful designs.
Were notions dealers, or “sellers of everything, makers of nothing”, already in the 18th century talented hunters of snags and other unique items? It may be an ode to know-how and social skills that the Musée des Arts Décoratifs provides us with this year.
If you needed one more argument to convince you: the exhibition is set in the Salon 1900, “living memory of the Paris World’s Fair”, as ordered by the museum to celebrate Art Nouveau and French decorative arts, and the Salon des Boiseries, unveiling some masterpieces including a Venini chandelier exhibited in 1925 in Paris.
