CinéMode, this is the name of the cinema and fashion exhibition you do not want to miss this Fall 2021 in Paris. Orchestrated by Jean-Paul Gaultier himself, this exhibition might give you as many chills as his last show did – which gathered many celebrities. And for good reason, the fashion designer has created a dozen movie costumes as he claimed: “without ‘Paris Frills’ show, I’d never have done this job”. “Paris Frills” is a French drama movie directed by Jacques Becker (1945) which story is set in a post-war fashion house that will spark the designer's fashion calling.
In 1970, Pierre Cardin welcomes the young Jean-Paul Gaultier in his house: it is his second fashion school. The boss – known for his futuristic and unisex creations, and pioneer of the star-dressmaker figure! Gaultier’s first proposition will be displayed for the first time in “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover” (1980) by Peter Greenaway. He also makes costumes for “Et Dieu créa l’Homme”, “Le Charme coincé de la bourgeoisie”, “James Blondes”, “Sleepy Hollow”, a mix of genres, humor, sexualization, love of cinema, and pop culture.
More than a Jean-Paul Gaultier retrospective, CinéMode tells about how clothes have found a special spot in movies in a great mix of references, misappropriation of codes and dissolution of borders. Inspiring clothes as much for viewers as for the actors wearing them, and a garment with many meanings, a genuine work of art through which Jean-Paul Gaultier delivers a message, his, as an echo to the news or the movie.
Calling all fans, Jean-Paul Gaultier will sign his catalog at the Cinémathèque Française bookstore on Sunday October 17, at 5:30 p.m. before a screening of Luc Besson’s “The Fifth Element” (1997).
