The Château de Chantilly – set 40km from Paris. Magnificent estate let in its 1871 state, as it was designed by Henri d’Orléans, Chantilly features a big Renaissance-style castle, wide gardens of different styles, and stables still used today.
You must know the Domaine de Chantilly was designed by Henry of Orleans, duke of Aumale. Thanks to his testamentary precautions, Chantilly is still (a century later) a preserved setting. As a matter of fact, great collector and heir-less, he donated his possessions to the Institut de France on the condition the day he dies the Musée Condée opens to the public.
This is why today the castle kepts the authentic decor and furniture. You can even discover the only royal apartments of the July monarchy, entirely preserved in France. Recenly renovated, you want to discover them in the castle.
It also features the second collection of old paintings after the Louvre and a prestigious collection of books, especially the famous "The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry".
The Musée Condée has been bequeathed by the Duc d’Aumale: great art lovers, he decided to stock his painting collection and art items collection in the Château de Chantilly. Painting galleries have been furbished to be the very theater of his exceptional collections. He collected the second biggest collection of old paintings in France – after the Louvre. It features over 830 paintings, 2,500 drawings, 2,500 sketches, 1,700 old photographers and about 250 sculptures. Among other treasures to discover: The Massacre of the Innocents by Nicolas Poussin, Portrait of Cardinal Richelieu by Champaigne, Orléans Madonna by Raphael, as well as paintings by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Titian, Poussin, Van Dyck, Watteau.
The Great Stables of the Chateau de Chantilly provide horse shows all year around.
They also house the famous Musée du Cheval - Horse Museum - opened in 2014, a modern museum displaying 200 works of art focusing on horse and its history. Playful and interactive, the museum suits everyone.
Moving on to the park and gardens, they have it all for fabulous discoveries and long walks. Imagine, 115 hectares gathering French formal gardens including Le Nôtre's flowerbed, as well as an English garden and even an English-Chinese garden. Playgrounds, maze, as well as kangaroos can be discovered in the castle estate. We highly recommend the cart ride to discover the whole strech of the estate, and the paddle boat ride for an uncommon discovery and the gorgeous views on the castle, and the exceptional bodies of water.
All year around, the castle provides you with new exhibitions and programs changing on every school break.
