Francis Bacon exhibition at Paris Centre Pompidou

From September 11, 2019 to January 20, 2020 Paris Centre Pompidou dedicates an exhibition to British artist Francis Bacon. A retrospective focusing mainly on the relationship between his works and his literary interests.

When literature inspires painting… An idea Centre Pompidou tries to put forward with a large retrospective around British painter Francis Bacon’s work, called Francis Bacon en toute lettre and running from September 11, 2019 to January 20, 2020. A monography following the major exhibitions dedicated to Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, André Derain and even Henri Matisse by the Parisian cultural venue.

This exhibition insists on “the relationship between his paintings and his literary interests” since the artist claimed that “literature created a powerful stimulus of his imaginary”. The literary field seems to inspire Bacon and especially “a ‘general atmosphere’, ‘pictures’ cut off of their original context”. And a turning point around this inspiration: 1971-1992, two decades matching for the artist to the moment of “surpassing, removal from painting, material, chaos” from where his first figures come out.

Authors like Eschyle, Nietzsche, Bataille, Conrad, Leiris and even Eliot share “poetical, stylistic values” like the painter’s, whose paintings displayed in the exhibition can become closer to it. An “ultimate phase” of his work from which he glimpses this “immaculate art” that is typical of him and from which he creates “his artistic horizon”. A retrospective to discover as soon as possible.
