The Monet - Mitchell Exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, last days

Among the beautiful exhibitions that await us this fall and winter, we discover the Monet - Michell at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. From October 5, 2022 to February 27, 2023, we offer an immersive journey into the work of two great artists who have marked their time, but also generations of painters.

This exhibition, in partnership with the Musée Marmottan Monet, presents for the first time in France, the major works of these two artists with similar inspirations. Two sacred monsters in their field for whom landscapes were above all dazzling colors before being forms.

On 4 floors, it is not one but 4 exhibitions that open up to us in the entire enclosure of the Vuiton Foundation. The exhibition begins in the basement with a retrospective of " Joan Mitchell " (1925-1992) which allows us to discover his work. It must be said that the French public does not necessarily know this American artist. As usual, the Fondation Vuitton allows a cross between modern and contemporary art.

Joan Mitchell was undoubtedly inspired by Claude Monet (1840-1926). This exhibition shows what these two artists from two different eras have in common. We discover the singular perceptions of these painters in front of the same landscape.

We can enjoy Claude Monet 's paintings from his Water Lilies period. These exhibitions include 36 works by the French artist and 80 by the American artist. Imposing works in large formats that explode with color before our eyes.

Claude Monet'sWater Lilies found consecration in the 1950s in the United States, where they were perceived as precursors of abstraction by the painters ofabstract expressionism.

In this context of the "Monet Revival", Mitchell participated in exhibitions in 1957 and 1958 devoted to the notion of abstract impressionism, a term coined by his friend Elaine de Kooning. The rapprochement between these two artists intensified with the installation of Joan Mitchell in 1968, in Vétheuil, in a property close to the one where Monet lived from 1878 to 1881. It should be noted that the artist nevertheless claimed her total artistic independence.

Discovering Joan Mitchell, this American artist less known to the French and European public through Monet, is what awaits us. Monet-Mitchell at the Fondation Louis-Vuitton (Paris 16th), is to be discovered from October 5, 2022 to February 27, 2023, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 am to 8 pm, Fridays from 11 am to 9 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 8 pm. Tickets range from 10€ to 16€.
