After a rise in temperatures, a risk of violent thunderstorms is forecast over a large part of France this weekend. For this reason, Météo France has placed a number of départements under vigilance orange and vigilance jaune for thunderstorms this Saturday, July 20, as well as this Sunday morning, July 21, 2024. Paris and all other departments in the Île-de-France region are affected by the yellow alert. We take a look at the forecasts.

Will thunder rumble on Saturday July 20 and Sunday July 21, 2024 in Paris and the Paris region? It's likely. As temperatures rise, thunderstorms are likely to sweep across much of the country this weekend. For this reason, Météo France has placed 12 departments in the north-east of France under a vigilance orange for thunderstorms for the day of July 20. In detail, these are Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Allier, Saône-et-Loire, Nièvre, Cher, Côte-d'Or, Yonne, Aube, Haute-Marne, Marne and Ardennes.

"Over a north-eastern part of the country, after a calm first part of the day, allowing the heat to reassert itself, there will be a clear deterioration in storminess in the afternoon and evening" warns Météo-France. "Strong thunderstorms accompanied by hail, intense precipitation, significant electrical activity and strong wind gusts will sweep the area under orange vigilance from south to north," adds the weather service, which indicates that the situation will improve in the second half of the night from Saturday to Sunday.

What's the situation in Paris and the rest of the Île-de-France region? The Paris region has not been spared this stormy episode. All 8 departments in the region have been placed on yellow alert for thunderstorms this Saturday, July 20. In detail, Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne and Val-d'Oise could be hit by heavy thunderstorms in the coming hours. According to Météo France, this stormy phenomenon could affect the Ile-de-France region this Saturday from 6pm, and continue throughout the evening and even into the night, until 6am on Sunday.

"In addition to the departments under orange alert, heavy thunderstorms could affect the Île-de-France region between late Saturday afternoon and late Saturday night" warns Météo France, adding that"the predictability of the expected phenomena is low (location, chronology, intensity), but the east of the region is generally more exposed to risk (Seine-et-Marne above all; to a lesser extent Essonne, the east of Paris Petite Couronne; then Yvelines and Val-d'Oise in the most pessimistic scenarios)."

According to Météo France,"the first thunderstorms could hit the area between late afternoon and evening, accompanied by fairly strong electrical activity, a risk of hail, gusts between 60 and 80km/h, and locally heavy rain". Then, for the rest of the night,"thunderstorms will remain possible, weaker in intensity, but with locally heavy rainfall, which could lead to accumulations exceeding 40mm over the whole episode" continues the weather service regarding its forecasts for the Île-de-France region.

As a result of this stormy phenomenon, we could lose 5°C to 6°C between Saturday and Sunday in the Paris region.
