The memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation is taking part in the new Nuit des Musées. Join us on Saturday, May 18, 2024 for a musical evening of discovery of this symbolic site on the Île de la Cité in Paris.

This spring, it's time to push open the doors of numerous museums and monuments in Paris and the Ile-de-France region, free of charge, for the latest edition of the European Night of Museums.

Every year, this cultural event invites Parisians to discover the heritage of the Île-de-France region by visiting numerous museums and monuments free of charge by night. From dusk until midnight, the cultural venues partnering the Nuit des Musées will be offering illuminated tours, fun activities, screenings and other special events. It's an opportunity to experience the museum in a fun and convivial way.

This year, Nuit des Musées returns on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at a number of venues, including the Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation.

Dedicated to the memory of all those deported from France between 1941 and 1944, the Martyrs of the Deportation Memorial is located on the Île de la Cité, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Created by the Association le Réseau du Souvenir, the memorial was inaugurated on April 12, 1962 by General de Gaulle.

The monument was designed by architect Georges-Henri Pingusson. Its architecture suggests certain characteristic aspects of the concentration camp world: imprisonment, oppression, impossible escape. Since November 23, 2007, this memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation has been listed as a historic monument. It is also one of the French Ministry of Defence's "hauts lieux de la mémoire nationale". On May 18, 2024, from 6pm, come and discover the architecture, history and memories of this highly symbolic place in Paris.

Nuits musicales du mémorial des martyrs de la Déportation

As part of European Museum Night, the Nuits musicales du mémorial des martyrs de la Déportation are back for a new edition, offering carte blanche to musician Hélios Azoulay.
For many years, composer, clarinettist and writer Hélios Azoulay has established himself as a benchmark performer, capable of bringing back to life the memories of the peoples who fell victim to the Second World War.
In a concert in three parts, he takes us on a unique, moving and exhilarating journey to the heart of cultures pierced by Nazi barbarism.

KLEZMER MUSIC. To the sound of a clarinet torn apart by a cry, Hélios Azoulay resurrects the traditional music of the Jews of Eastern Europe. With him, the infinite delicacy of singer Marielle Rubens and the strings of his Ensemble de Musique Incidentale waver forever between laughter and tears. For there is no music that does not cry out for life. This concert is a pure moment of levitation. Klezmer is Chagall in a flood!
LE JAZZ MANOUCHE. How can we not pay tribute to the music of a people eternally shaken for having the audacity to simply demand to live and remain free? Django Reinhardt's music has an inextinguishable joy in it. With Hélios Azoulay on clarinet, the eclectic and subtle Frédéric Loiseau on guitar and the inimitable Jean-Michel Charbonnel on double bass, this concert is a flight of elegance and joyful madness.
L'ÂME DU FLAMENCO. Despite their internment in French camps, gypsies have always retained the unmistakable fire of their soul. And this temperament is housed with strength and poetry in the indefinable Duende of Flamenco. It's this strength, this rage, this enthusiasm, that sublime dancer and choreographer Karine Gonzalez will bring to life in a unique and passionate encounter with Hélios Azoulay and his musicians.
