This spring, it's time to push open the doors of numerous museums and monuments in Paris and the Ile-de-France region, free of charge, for the latest edition of the European Night of Museums.
Every year, this cultural event invites Parisians to discover the heritage of the Île-de-France region by visiting numerous museums and monuments free of charge by night. From dusk until midnight, the cultural venues partnering the Nuit des Musées will be offering illuminated tours, fun activities, screenings and other special events. It's an opportunity to enjoy a museum experience that's both friendly and fun.
This year, Nuit des Musées returns on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at a number of venues, including the memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation.
Dedicated to the memory of all those deported from France between 1941 and 1944, the memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation is located on the Ile de la Cité, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Created by the Association le Réseau du Souvenir, the memorial was inaugurated on April 12, 1962 by General de Gaulle.
The monument was designed by architect Georges-Henri Pingusson. Its architecture suggests certain characteristic aspects of the concentration camp world: imprisonment, oppression, impossible escape. Since November 23, 2007, this memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation has been listed as a historic monument. It is also one of the French Ministry of Defence's "hauts lieux de la mémoire nationale". On May 17, 2025, from 6pm, come and discover the architecture, history and memories of this highly symbolic place in Paris.
Today, podcasts are essential tools for transmitting the History and Memory of all periods and all historical actors. By embracing this medium, the sites of memory of contemporary conflicts are addressing both the scientific community and the general public. To coincide with European Museum Night, the Hauts lieux de la mémoire nationale are offering a Podcast Night, a new way of discovering the Memorial to the Martyrs of the Deportation, with continuous broadcasts of audio documentaries on the history and memory of the Deportation.
Starting at 5pm, let yourself be carried away by a series of poignant podcasts that will plunge you into the heart of stories of deportation and transmission. Through the memory of places, such as the Buchenwald camp, and the intimate memory, carried by the moving voices of Ginette Kolinka and Elie Wiesel.
During the evening, between 7 and 8 pm, a live set will be set up on the esplanade of the memorial: a moment of exchange to explore how places of remembrance are seizing podcasting as a new vector of transmission.
