For many, June 21 is synonymous with the summer solstice. But for others, this symbolic date unquestionably refers to the Fête de la Musique.
A popular and free musical event, the Fête de la Musique was created in 1982 on the initiative of the French Ministry of Culture. That year, the Ministry of Culture's studies and research department conducted a major survey of French cultural practices. It revealed that five million people, including one young person in two, play a musical instrument. So Jack Lang, architect and scenographer Christian Dupavillon, a member of his Cabinet, and Maurice Fleuret came up with the idea of a major popular event to enable all musicians to express themselves and make themselves known. The very first Fête de la Musique was launched on June 21 1982, the symbolic day of the summer solstice.
And so, for over 40 years now, the Fête de la Musique has been bringing live music to life throughout Paris and the Île-de-France region. And this 2023 edition is no exception to the rule, with a host of great events to discover in the Ile-de-France region on Wednesday June 21, 2023.
If you live in the Yvelines, head for the town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which offers an eclectic program to be discovered at the Claude Debussy conservatory, but also in the park of La CLEF, and everywhere else in the town.
