The Nuit Blanche 2025 program at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme :

  • Midnight Gallery: "Hände"
    Saturday, June 7, 2025 - 7:00 PM - 11:30 PM
On the occasion of Nuit Blanche, the mahJ will showcase Hände in the contemporary gallery, an overlooked masterpiece of early avant-garde cinema. After Nuit Blanche, the exhibition Hände (1927) will remain open until early November.
For a night dedicated to cinema, the mahJ presents Hände, a seminal work from Berlin's 1920s avant-garde scene. Conceived by American photographer Stella F. Simon (1878-1973) and directed by Hungarian-born journalist and writer Miklós Bándy (1904-1971), this short film inspired by dance stands out for its use of hands as representations of characters. Against abstract constructed-settings inspired by constructivism, hands wave, cross, brush past each other, collide, and sometimes overlay to grasp or connect. Without dialogue, this abstract ballet appears to tell a universal love story between one, two, or three individuals.
Unseen behind-the-scenes photographs featured in the exhibition trace the film’s development within the circle of pioneering abstract cinema figures Viking Eggeling and Hans Richter, showing its screenings during Berlin's Novemberguppe gatherings, and its rescue in 1935 by Alfred Barr, then director of MoMA in New York. Surrounding the screening of Hände, documents reveal details about Stella F. Simon, Miklós Bándy, Javanese dancer Takka-Takka, German choreographer Herta Feist, as well as American composer Marc Blitzstein and set designer Max Dungert—artists from diverse backgrounds who participated in Berlin’s vibrant cultural scene before the rise of the Nazi regime.
