Fashion and couture take over the small screen! Spotlight on the extraordinary story of Karl Lagerfeld, depicted in a 6-episode biographical series, to be viewed from June 7, 2024 on Disney+. Entitled Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, the mini-biopic is an unprecedented opportunity to penetrate the intimacy of the most discreet of couturiers, and discover or rediscover his rise in the world of Parisian fashion in the 70s.
The event series, imagined by Isaure Pisani-Ferry and Jennifer Have, based on an adaptation of the biography "Kaiser Karl" by journalist Raphaëlle Bacqué (co-writer), will be directed by Jérôme Salle and Audrey Estrougo, and produced by Gaumont. It will lift the veil on the exceptional destiny of Chanel's former artistic director, who will die in 2019.
The episodes set the scene in 1972, at the genesis of Karl Lagerfeld's great ambitions. At the time, the designer had only one obsession: to become the most adored French couturier in the fashion world. The only hitch was that, at the same time, a major competitor was already occupying this coveted role: Yves Saint Laurent. From his rivalry with Pierre Bergé to his tragic romance with the young dandy Jacques de Bascher, via parties and decadence, discover the hidden face of Karl Lagerfeld, a man as discreet as he is complex, in desperate search of recognition.
The streaming platform has just revealed the series' 5-star cast. The Kaiser will be played by renowned German actor Daniel Brühl(Captain America, Inglorious Basterds), Théodore Pellerin(Chien de garde) will take on the role of his young lover Jacques de Bascher, Arnaud Valois(120 battements par minute) will slip into the shoes of Yves Saint Laurent and Alex Lutz(Guy, Vortex) that of Pierre Bergé. The episodes will also introduce Gaby Aghion, founder of Chloé, played by Agnès Jaoui(Le goût des autres). A key stage in the history of the couturier, who passed through the Maison, and was certainly a driving force in his career.
Other well-known personalities join the cast, including Sunnyi Melles (Marlène Dietrich), Parisian it-girl Jeanne Damas (Paloma Picasso), successful Belgian singer Claire Laffut (Loulou de la Falaise) and Paul Spera (Andy Warhol).
