Our opinion:
It's clear from the outset that Une Vie is probably one of the finest films of 2024. An inspiring biopic, the film highlights the bravery and determination of an ordinary man who did everything in his power to achieve the impossible!
Moved by the unsanitary conditions of the refugee camps in Czechoslovakia in the early days of the Second World War, Nicholas Winston moved heaven and earth to identify the children in these camps and find them foster families in England to shelter them until they could be safely reunited with their families.
The film oscillates between a "present", fifty years later, where Nicky, forced to sort out his life to welcome his first grandson, relives this episode and tries to share it so it doesn't fall into oblivion, and the past where we see how, with the help of his mother and a few comrades, he orchestrated the obtaining of visas, transport and adoption of 669 Czechoslovak children by British families.
The sober, powerful direction focuses on the essentials, eliminating the superfluous! In the same way that Nicky sorts things out, James Hawes gets straight to the point, creating a cinematic experience rich in emotion and meaning, despite (or perhaps because of) its apparent simplicity. The emotion is palpable in every scene, and it's hard to hold back a tear at the grandiose finale. At over 86 years of age, the Oscar-winning performer of Hannibal Lecter has lost none of his superb looks!
