In this fresh take on the iconic DC character, Clark Kent must balance his Kryptonian origins with his human life. Facing off against Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), he embodies hope more than ever in a world teetering on crisis. Directed by the filmmaker behind Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, this new installment marks a pivotal chapter in the DC Universe.
Clark Kent, a reporter at the Daily Planet, strives to maintain the delicate balance between his secret identity and his core human values, in a world where truth and justice are constantly tested. The cast features the dynamic duo of Corenswet and Brosnahan, alongside notable names like Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi. The soundtrack is composed by John Murphy.
This Superman is part of the opening chapter of the new DC universe overseen by James Gunn, often referred to as “Gods and Monsters.” The film sidesteps the trap of a traditional origin story, opting instead for a brighter tone. It strikes a balance between spectacular visuals and everyday details, with Metropolis and the Daily Planet serving as fundamental dramatic backdrops.
Our Review of Superman:
Following the notably successful The Suicide Squad, which broke the curse of DC's often underwhelming superhero films, James Gunn delivers a stunning, all-around exceptional adaptation of Superman. Right from its compelling, energetic storytelling, the director strikes a perfect balance—ramping up the action but also pausing for heartfelt moments. It’s a clever blend, both subtle and daring. Of course, there are a few minor narrative hiccups (which are quickly dismissed), but they hardly detract from the overall brilliance.
The film hits all the marks fans have been craving: the Fortress of Solitude, the bustling Daily Planet with its dynamic team, an dazzling Metropolis, and a host of villains—everything one expects from a Superman movie. The film stays true to the spirit of the comics in its approach to the character and his adventures. Its brisk pacing is complemented by subtle humor, adding levity without overdoing it. That’s a key strength here: unlike Taika Waititi, who often leans into broad, loud comedy—as seen in Thor: Ragnarok—James Gunn opts for a more nuanced humor, sprinkled throughout like seasoning, reminiscent of his work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. And it’s all the more enjoyable for its restraint and precision.
The film also wisely avoids the tired trope of origins stories: no alien crashes, no powers-developing montage. Here, the hero isn’t born but already in place, fully formed. This fresh approach works beautifully right from the start. Casting is spot-on, with David Corenswet presenting a perfect, modern, and refreshing Superman. Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is equally compelling—faithful to the comics, yet fresh and engaging, delivering her character with surgical precision. Everything fans wanted to see. Nicholas Hoult excels as a flamboyant Lex Luthor, bringing theatrical flair. The Justice Gang also wins points—Guy, played by Nathan Fillion, is irreverent and fun, while Mister Terrific gets significant on-screen presence, adding depth to the ensemble.
Another highlight is the character design—both modern and retro, especially in the costume—a bold choice that’s both refreshing and familiar. The film feels relevant, echoing current global conflicts (no need for subtlety here) and emphasizing the power of journalism and information. Superman is reimagined in a way that breaks conventions, and it’s incredibly satisfying. Respectful of the source material—from the comics, TV series, to previous films—the movie pays homage through its soundtrack, its overall inspiration, and subtle cameos and references (hello, Michael Rosenbaum... we saw you!).
A heartfelt love letter to Superman and the genre, delivering a fulfilling cinematic experience. This is the Superman movie we've been waiting for from DC… don’t miss it!
