From April 4 to June 29, 2025, the Théâtre de Belleville will be hosting Maintenant je n'écris qu'en français, written and performed by young Ukrainian artist Viktor Kyrylov. A cross between personal narrative and political theater, the play recounts the shock experienced by a student in Moscow on February 24, 2022, the day Russia invaded Ukraine. At the age of 20, Viktor sees his dream - to enter the prestigious GITIS institute - turned into a burden, as his presence in Russia becomes synonymous with betrayal in the eyes of his people.

By blending the intimate with the political, Viktor Kyrylov constructs a monologue that promises to be lucid and disturbing. Through his words, we follow the journey of a young man torn between love of the theater, lost friendship, guilt at having stayed, and the pain of inner exile. This tale of uprootedness plunges us into a fracture zone, between two languages, two countries, two allegiances. The play weaves together fragments of memories, reflections, anger and tenderness, painting a portrait of a generation riven by questions of loyalty, identity and resistance.

The show is aimed at audiences sensitive to stories of exile, the contemporary memory of conflict and the purified forms of documentary theater. The strength of the text lies in its sobriety: direct words, without pathos, carried by an actor-author who is incarnate. The minimalist set design leaves plenty of room for the spoken word, the tension of silence, and the audience's gaze. It's not just a question of recounting a war, but of making us hear what it provokes in the intimacy of bodies and personal choices.
With Maintenant je n'écris qu'en français, Théâtre de Belleville promises to deliver a poignant and necessary theatrical experience. A lucid show that gives voice to a European youth fractured by conflict, and questions the place of art in the face of global upheaval.
