Le Bicolore presents À la croisée des eaux : les échos de demain, an exhibition by Jeannette Ehlers curated by Anna Krogh and Elisa Leïla Durand, from May 29 to July 14, 2024.
Artist Jeannette Ehlers invites us to reflect on memory and resilience through her Trinidadian and Danish roots. The exhibition is a tribute to the heritages of the African diaspora and their potential for empowerment and even healing.
Jeannette Ehlers favors a collaborative approach to linking memory and physicality. Representations of blackness, notions of collective memory and mixed heritages are central to her work, which is situated at the crossroads of time, as the title of the exhibition "À la croisée des eaux: les échos de demain" (At the crossroads: echoes of tomorrow) indicates.
How do we preserve what's left of us? Jeannette Ehlers' work is permeated by the theme ofidentity. As curator Anna Krogh explains, "the notion of identity is currently as universal as it is individual (...). Today, the question 'who am I?' is formulated more precisely as 'who can I be? Jeannette Ehlers tackles issues of identity such as gender, race, postcolonial consciousness and power, in an affective and intimate way. The works presented in the exhibition have been conceived as a journey that links them together. According to curator Elisa Leïla Durand, "Jeannette Ehlers offers us a space-time where the lands and seas of diaspora are transcended."
Jeannette Ehlers is a Danish-Trinidadian artist based in Copenhagen, who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2006. Her practice takes shape experimentally through photography, video,installation, sculpture and performance. In her work, the artist addresses the notion of empowerment and healing, honoring the legacies of resistance in the African diaspora. "Generally speaking, our standards are derived from a white, Euro-centric gaze, but there are so many other ways of looking at things (...). These are the ones I'd like to try and bring to light. Discussion moderated by Elisa Leïla Durand. Elvan Zabunyan is a contemporary art historian, professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and art critic. For over twenty-five years, her work has focused on racial, postcolonial and feminist issues in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art.
